I’m Gonna Touch The Sky.: My personal view on KONY 2012.
I honestly have mixed feelings about it. I do believe the people supporting this movement have the best of intentions, but I think you need to look on the other side of things. Did you know only about 32% of the donations went to direct services? Plus, another thing is that by doing this, you are asking for military intervention and supporting the Ugandan army. One of them being the Sudan People’s Liberation Army, who the invisible children defend, were also accused of rape and looting as well. Military intervention may or may not be the right idea, but people supporting KONY 2012 probably don’t realize they’re supporting the Ugandan military who are themselves raping and looting away. If people know this and still support Invisible Children because they feel it’s the best solution based on their knowledge and research, I have no issue with that. But I don’t think most people are in that position, and that’s a problem.
Don’t get me wrong, awareness is good. But I have a few questions. Why attempt to stop Kony now? I know, it’s better to act now than never. But then again, why haven’t we acted before? And see, reports say that he hasn’t even been in Uganda for the last 6 years. Not to mention, this isn’t just happening in Uganda, but all over Africa. Another thing, he doesn’t have 30,000 children in his army. That was a statistic which summed up the total amount of kids he captured over a period of time. Also, what would be his result or punishment? What if we killed him? Does that make us any better than him? I think it would be hard capturing him considering the fact he will have children defending him, and dead kids are a really bad image. So in the end, I appreciate what is being done, but I hope that some people actually know what is really going on and what would happen. There are two sides to every story. Just because everyone telling me about this or seeing about this makes me wonder if they know any more details than just about who Kony is.
